Verdict: A Fantastic Machine for a Niche
In the final tally, the Apple Mac Studio is a fantastic option for Apple users who need more power than other recent Mac offerings, but not a lot more power than they’d see in the M1 Max version of the MacBook Pro. It’s a little cheaper when comparing configurations that use the same processor, but it also requires an extra monitor and peripherals, which erase the price differences pretty quickly.
On its own, the Mac Studio is a powerful little desktop, and a huge step up from the Mac mini and the Apple iMac. If you want a macOS desktop for video editing or similar media work, this is the little workstation to get. But the comparisons on the Intel side show that putting that kind of power into a compact desktop is still a pricey option. Comparable Windows systems from Corsair are just as expensive, and others may require a lot more work to get up and running, like the DIY-minded Intel NUC 12 Extreme Kit, which offers the power of «Alder Lake» 12th Generation Core processors, but is a barebones unit that requires bringing your own GPU, RAM, storage, and copy of Windows.

If you’ve been eyeing an aging 27-inch iMac and are due for an upgrade, or have considered the Mac Pro but know that it’s way too much computer for your needs, then the Mac Studio is the perfect option. But for such an impressively built machine, that narrow appeal is the biggest problem with the new Mac Studio. It’s a great machine, arguably one of the best Apple has made, but it’s not a great fit for most.

Apple’s Mac Studio is a gorgeous, powerful compact desktop for content-crunching professionals. Our test model shows it running close to some MacBook Pros, though, which narrows its potential audience to those dead-set on a desktop plus a big monitor.

Mac Studio Configuration Options
The Mac Studio is available in several configuration options. Our own review unit is equipped with an M1 Max processor, with 10 CPU cores, a 32-core GPU, 64GB of memory, and a 2TB SSD for storage. All told, our test unit sells for $3,199 for the Mac Studio alone. With the included Studio Display and new black Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, and Mouse, the full package sells for $5,245, which gives you everything you need, without having to bring your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
There are two primary versions of the Mac Studio available, one using the M1 Max processor previously seen in the MacBook Pro, and a step-up model that uses the new M1 Ultra processor. Configurations can also be upgraded with additional GPU cores for more graphics power, larger memory options, and storage options that range from standard to huge.
The M1 Max model starts at $1,999 for the base model, with a 10-core CPU, a 24-core GPU, a 16-core neural engine, and 32GB of unified memory, all paired with 512GB of SSD storage.
You can upgrade the M1 Max to a 32-core GPU for $200 more. You can also upgrade the system memory to 64GB for an additional $400. Storage can be increased incrementally, ranging from the standard 512GB up to 8TB of SSD storage for $2,400.
The M1 Ultra models step up the basic package considerably, with a 20-core CPU and a 48-core GPU, literally doubling the M1 Max specs. With 64GB of unified memory and 1TB of SSD storage, the M1 Ultra Studio starts at $3,999. It also swaps out the Studio’s front ports from USB-C to Thunderbolt 4, giving you a grand total of six Thunderbolt 4 connections.
Again, you can increase the specs and capability of the machine by adjusting the configuration. To start, you can bump up to a 64-core GPU for an additional $1,000. You can increase the memory allotment to a whopping 128GB for an additional $800. And system storage can be increased up to 8TB for an additional $2,200. All told, the top model of the Mac Studio, with M1 Ultra, 64-core GPU, 128GB of memory, and 8TB of SSD storage rings up at $7,999.
Mac Studio: should you buy it?
There’s a lot to love about the Mac Studio, particularly its excellent performance and compact design. If you’re after a powerful and petite workstation for doing your creative work on, you’re not going to find a better machine.
But is it a product we’d unanimously recommend to people? The answer is no. This is a niche device aimed at quite a specific audience. If you do heavy creative work and want a small workstation, this is absolutely the right product for you.
However, if you don’t need the kind of performance on offer here – and many people simply won’t – then you’d be better off buying something more affordable, such as the Mac mini. If you’re looking for something to work on while you travel, a laptop, such as the 14-inch MacBook Pro, may also be a better bet.

Practical design
Saying the Mac Studio looks like a Mac mini on steroids is a pretty spot-on way to describe it. It measures 7.7 inches square, the same as the Mac mini, but it’s 3.7 inches tall, nearly thrice the height of the Mac mini. When placed underneath the Studio Display, there’s about an inch’s worth of clearance.
At 3.7 inches tall, the Mac Studio easily fits under Apple’s new Studio Display.

The Mac Studio M1 Max weighs 5.9 pounds, while the M1 Ultra version weighs two pounds more due to its thermal system. On the Ultra it’s made of copper, which is better at absorbing heat than the aluminum system in the Max version. Copper is heavier than aluminum and costs more, which probably affects the Ultra’s price, which is twice that of the M1 Max Mac Studio.
Cool air enters the Mac Studio through holes in the bottom of the machine, circulates through the components to cool them off, and then the warm air is blown out the back. While Apple acknowledges that the Mac Studio will make fan noise when pushed, the company makes reassurances that it’s still a very quiet computer. That claim held up throughout my testing; most of the time, I didn’t hear a thing, and I had to stop myself and listen when there was fan noise. It was barely noticeable.

The Mac Studio is available only in silver—as is the Studio Display, so they match nicely. The Mac Studio’s top and bottom edges are quite sharp— by comparison, the MacBook Pro has smooth, rounded edges. While small, however, the Mac Studio isn’t meant to be a portable Mac, so you won’t be grabbing it nearly as often as a MacBook Pro.
If you want to criticize Apple for unoriginality, I understand that—Apple basically took the Mac mini design and expanded it. As a new entry in Apple’s Mac lineup, it would’ve been cool to see Apple do something unique. But gone are the days of Apple taking serious design risks, like with a cube, a chrome cantilever arm, or a cylinder. Apple now prioritizes practical designs, and then embellishes them to make them have that Apple look and feel. Sure, the Mac Studio is basically a silver metal box, but it’s instantly recognizable as an Apple product —and not just because of the big Apple logo on the top.
Compared to the G4 Cube, the Mac Studio’s design is quite conservative, but it is the upgraded Power Mac G4 Cube we waited 22 years for.

Price
Now, let’s talk price for a moment. The MacBook Pro and Mac Studio technically start at the same price, but there’s a lot to consider here. With the MacBook Pro, you’re looking at a 14-inch model with a 10-core CPU, 14-core GPU, and 16GB of unified memory. However, you do get everything you need to use the computer – a screen (and a great one at that), keyboard, and trackpad. Plus, you have Touch ID built-in. If you want the 16-inch MacBook Pro, it starts at $2,499 with a larger screen, bigger battery, and a slightly more powerful 16-core GPU.
For the same $1,999, the Mac Studio comes with much more performance with the Apple M1 Max – 10 CPU cores, 24 GPU cores, and 32GB of unified memory. But you don’t get anything except the computer. You’ll need to buy the keyboard, mouse, and display separately. And if you’re planning to get Apple’s matching Studio Display, that’s at least $1,599 more you have to spend on the screen.
But we talked a lot about the M1 Ultra here, and if you want that, you have to pay at least $3,999 for the Mac Studio alone. That’s right, for $4,000, you still don’t get a screen. And that’s a watered-down version of the M1 Ultra with 48 GPU cores and 64GB of unified memory. Granted, you get 1TB of storage, too, but that’s still a huge ask. And if you want the M1 Ultra with 64 GPU cores, it costs an extra $1,000.
For $100 less than that price, you can buy a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip, 32 GPU cores, 64GB of unified memory, and 4TB of storage. And you get everything you need to use that laptop.
I/O
Outside of the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio is the only computer that Apple makes with more than four USB-C ports. On the M1 Ultra version of the machine, all of the USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 4 ports, which proves to be extremely handy for those like me, who are steeped knee-deep in the Thunderbolt ecosystem.
Cheaper M1 Max-enabled Mac Studios lack the necessary bandwidth to have six Thunderbolt ports, relegating the front two ports to “10Gbps” USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports instead. For me that’s disappointing, but for the majority of people, four Thunderbolt 4 ports + two USB 3.1 ports provides more than enough USB-C I/O.
Next to the two front-facing USB-C ports is a UHS-II-enabled SDXC card slot. This is a perfect addition for those who regularly offload photos and videos from digital cameras. Although SD cards aren’t nearly as fast as something like CFExpress, a storage medium that many modern cameras use, SD cards remain far more prevalent. Even some of the newest cameras that can capture 8K video support shooting directly to an SD Card.
I’ve recently been testing Canon’s R5c hybrid mirrorless camera, and it features an updated HEVC codec with a very reasonable 540Mbps data rate. Such a data rate happens to be perfect for V90 SD cards. In fact, card manufacturer Wise just announced a V90 offering that maxes out at 512GB, the largest such V90 card yet, and one capable of storing up to two hours of 8K video captured with the R5c. Stay tuned, because in an upcoming post and video I’ll be discussing why the R5c is such an amazing camera and an ideal Mac Studio companion.

You wouldn’t be crazy to think that you were looking at the back of an Intel Mac mini when looking at the rear of the Mac Studio. Outside of the arrangement of the ports, the type of I/O is very similar. Mac Studio features four Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 ports on the rear, a 10GbE port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm headphone output.

Unlike the Mac mini, 10GbE comes standard on all Mac Studio machines, which is great for connecting to NAS boxes, or even something like Blackmagic Design’s newly introduced Cloud Store. While not as fast as Thunderbolt, 10GbE can travel over much longer distances and whole networks can be designed around it.

In my case, I have my Mac Studio connected to a TP-Link 10G Unmanaged Ethernet Switch, Synology NAS with 10GbE card, and a 5Gbps AT&T Fiber Internet connection. What’s great is that all of these networked components reside in another area of the house away from my office, meaning that I don’t have to worry about the noise emanating from the Synology NAS when a Time Machine backup decides to run.
Of course, I can’t forget to mention one of the biggest I/O benefits of the Mac Studio when compared to M1-based machines. The M1 Mac mini supported just one Thunderbolt display up to 6K resolution, while the Mac Studio supports four 6K Pro Display XDRs or 5K Studio Displays simultaneously. In all the Mac Studio supports five displays at once, if you count its ability to also connect to a 4K display via HDMI.
